COURSE DESCRIPTION

Credits: 2.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

This 3-day course provides an overview of the Staged and Continuous Representation of the Capability Maturity Model Integration for Development, Version 1.2. The course is designed to provide systems engineers, software engineers, product managers, project managers, and process practitioners with a broad look at the components that make up this version of the CMMI, a model that has become one of the world’s leading frameworks for software process improvement.

CMMI is a proven methodology for planning, managing, controlling, and measuring project work across four disciplines: systems engineering, software engineering, supplier management, and integrated product and process development. The model can be implemented in one of two representations: Staged or Continuous. If you are not sure which representation might be best for you, contact Philip Hill at (703) 968-5398 for more information.

The course is built around a series of lectures, class exercises, and class discussions. The scope of the course includes discussion of the components of the CMMI, including Process Areas, Generic Goals, Generic Practices, Specific Goals, and Specific Practices. The course also includes descriptions of each of the 5 Maturity Levels: Initial, Managed, Defined, Quantitatively Managed, and Optimizing.

Note: Completion of this course is required for those who wish to participate in a SCAMPI Class A appraisal, those who wish to enroll in Intermediate Concepts of CMMI, and those who wish to undergo CMMI Lead Appraiser training or CMMI Instructor training.

Educational Outcomes: Upon completion of this course the participants will be able to:
1. Understand the general scope and intention of the CMMI product suite,
2. Understand the structure and purpose of the models component framework,
3. Gain the knowledge needed to begin implementing parts of the model,
4. Demonstrate an understanding of how CMMI may be applied within their organizations to meet process improvement goals, and
5. Recognize the influence effective process management contributes to product quality.

AUDIENCE

This introductory course is intended for 4 broad categories of participants:

  • Those wishing to learn more about how CMMI can augment process improvement efforts.
  • Technical practitioners who may be required to operate under or help implement a CMMI program.
  • Process analysts who may be required to design or monitor a CMMI program.
  • Managers who may be charged with determining a path for process improvement in their departments or organization.
PREREQUISITES

There are no prerequisites for this course.

SUCCESSFUL COURSE COMPLETION

In order to receive a certificate of completion, attendance for the duration of the full class is required. Further, active participation in discussion sessions and class exercises are expected as well.
